I can really relate to the Hagen quote. I think we have spoken before about the similarities in what we do. As a therapist the clients I have most success with are the ones I can see myself in.
That's so interesting! Why do you think that is? Do you feel that seeing yourself in your clients helps you understand how to guide them better, or is it down to something else?
Sounds like you're describing empathy! You've reminded me again of one of my favourite quotes. I found it in a book called Collision and Convergence in Actor Training (Michael Chekhov and Sanford Meisner) who quoted Larry Silverberg saying, "The greatest gift you can give to another is the quality of your attention. We live in a world of continuous partial attention." No wonder you're able to heal so many through your sessions, you have a wonderful quality to your attention.
It's so amazing you had a Gifted and Talented Register at your school, it's such a beautiful way of nurturing and encouraging young minds. Great teachers can change lives. I'm glad your early drama experience gave you the strength and determination to become an actor and let time be wonderfully elastic on stage (yes, time does seem to stop or "disappear" somehow in rehearsal spaces...).
That's such a valuable comment, Stéph. I do feel lucky that our school had these mechanisms in place to encourage us to believe in ourselves. I think a lot of my self-belief did come from school, (and my mum). Also the opportunity to get to play with so many great plays is lucky in itself. I remember playing Liz in Our Country's Good (a role I would LOVE to revive one day) and directing a version of Metamorphosis. Such fun.
What was the drama department like in your school?
Great teachers definitely can change lives. I also remember a teacher pointing out to me that it was a gift to be able to talk to everyone and anyone. Those comments really do stay with you and why I really make an effort to bolster the confidence of others.
Funny to think that if I hadn't have had this experience, we might not have been collaborating together and having a play at the Cambridge Junction together this year!

Not so much guide them but connect with them. I believe the process is psychic. If I feel it then they do too. And this aids the 'healing' process.
