We have spoken before about some of the ways an actors work might be similar to my work as a psychotherapist. Trying to understand the inner workings of another person, or to get inside their story.
But actually our work also gives us ample opportunity to avoid ourselves. Our true inner self.
An actor can (if they choose) get 'lost' in a character. A therapist can also get 'lost' in the world of their client.
I have been on a course for the last four days which has shown me how deeply we must learn to inhabit ourselves in order to truly connect with our clients.
It is truly the deepest work I have ever done, and it feels very apt that I then read your piece here.
You’re an artist of the psychotherapy kind. Your relationship to your work is so fascinating and a reflection of who you are. I’ve really come to realise the resonance of the saying, “people meet you as deeply as they meet themselves”. Always love reading your comments and discovering more examples of how our interests and our processes overlap
